Why does a nuns' church have gun slits? Klaryski, the Poor Clares' Church, stood on the road to the bridge into the Old Town. It's the onion-domed brick church. Its tower, raised around 1740, got slits for firearms.

What did a city hospital become in 1946? The yellow gabled house: Centrum Informacji Muzealnej. This former municipal hospital opened in 1946 as the City Museum, named after Leon Wyczółkowski.

What was made inside the Ernst Mix Tenement? Soap, and candles too. It's the white corner block. Ernst Mix's company ran a soap and candle factory in this building, which worked here from 1863 until the Second World War.

Who printed a constitution here? It's the grey block behind the square. Bydgoskie Centrum Finansowe has a printer's past: Grünauer's print house issued official documents, from Bydgoszcz's first newspaper to the 1807 Constitution of the Duchy of Warsaw.

Who is hiding on this façade? For the owner's new Hotel Pod Orłem, Under the Eagle, architect Święcicki hid his own self-portrait among the allegorical heads on the façade. Its corner bay wears a red dome.

Why would a shop call itself an only child? That is what Jedynak means. It's the white store with pilasters. The label stood on its roof for around forty years, until it was finally removed in 2000.

Which way to Koronowo, a medieval traveller might ask? Right here. The first crossing of Gdańska Street below us, with Dworcowa and Pomorska Streets, sits on the medieval fork where the road to Koronowo split off.

What prize did a sharp-eyed burgher win here? This stretch of Gdańska Street was used by townspeople from downtown Bydgoszcz for their annual shooting competition, and the best shot received a badge called the Golden Hen.

Who planted the Clares' garden? The Clares arrived in Bydgoszcz in 1615 and created a garden beside their monastery. It was practical as well as ornamental, with a fish pond, a kitchen garden and an orchard of medicinal plants.

Which house was the giant of its day? It's the pink corner house with battlements. The Alexander Timm House was built in 1852 for a rentier, designed by B. Brinkmann, and was one of the largest tenement houses in Bromberg.

Whose son designed this church? It's the red-brick church. Adler, son of a Bromberg couple with a house on Jezuicka Street, designed Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Adler's Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem was consecrated during the Kaiser's journey there.

Who paid for this square's trees? A general. Major General Helmut von Weltzien financed its extension to the south and its trees and greenery, and the square was then named in his honour, Weltzienplatz.

Which composer's brother gave a concert here? It's the curved white hall. In the Sala Kameralna Akademii Muzycznej, the Music Academy's chamber hall, pianist Feliks Szymanowski, then living in Bydgoszcz, played; his brother was the composer Karol Szymanowski.

Which emperor rode here? A statue of Emperor Wilhelm I on horseback was erected in 1893, in memory of the late emperor, as a tribute to the creator of the German Reich and the father of the nation.

Why did the Carl Meinhardt Tenement lose its statues? It's the cream, round-gabled house. On a January afternoon a figure fell from its top and killed a teacher, Jan Kranz, and a pastry-shop pupil, Irena Mądrowska.

Who came here for a portrait? It's the yellow house with the dome. Kamienica Plac Wolności 1 housed the studio of court photographer Carl Brasch, as well as the Kaiser-Cafe and the Falstaff restaurants, and shops of every kind.

Where did this street go to the movies? On Christmas Day, Wacław Szkaradkiewicz opened a cinema here on Gdańska Street and called it Corso; in later years it was renamed Bałtyk.

Who sold cars here? The tenement at Plac Wolności 7 was first co-owned by the building designer Carl Meinhardt; sandstone-clad, its glazed ground floor first housed a Chevrolet dealer, Antoni Butowski.

Who gave the townspeople their park? After a renovation led by Paul Meyerkamp, the municipal park administration took over the Stadt Park and opened it to the city public.

Who baked on this street? It's the dark red house. In the Julius Grey House a baker ran his bakery, then a confectionery factory. Later pastry chef Stanisław Hass moved Café Cristal, with its Art Nouveau décor, here.

Where did ladies get private booths? Twin gables: George Sikorski's tenement. Weidner designed it for this barber's salon.
